Argumentative paper?
I have an assignment to do an argumentative paper. The topic I have chosen is "special education" (pro). This may seem like a strange topic to some. I live in a small town where alot of people think that special ed is for "dumb" kids. Alot of parents are fighting the school system to have their kids removed from the program because of the lack of knowledge of what the program really is about. These kids are suffering because the parents are being ignorant and saying "I don't want my kid in the dumb class". I am a parent of an exceptional child and am totally for the program, but I am having trouble with my paper. I have ran searches on FAPE, Least Restrictive Environment and IDEA. But everything I have found is telling me that these acts & orginizations are letting the children down by not following through with funding & such. Can anyone help me with this? I need some positive words to work with. Thank you all.

Special Education, I think, has positive effects on children because:
(1) they will not be compared to children without disabilities;
(2) they will not feel inferior to the other kids;
(3) they will make friends there; that is, they will have the chance to go to their classmates' houses to play, to party, etc.;
(4) parents will certainly be interested in meeting other parents too (because they all have a lot in common);
(5) parents will certainly be willing to cooperate (in a number of different ways) as soon as they see how well their kids are doing in school;
(6) since the kids are special, the teachers will also need special training;
(7) since it´s a special school, the kids could also learn how to grow fruits and vegetables, how to take care of pets, etc.;
(8) depending on each one´s abilities, they could learn how to paint or draw, or even how to play different instruments;
(9) there will be a small number of kids in each class;
(10) a closer and better supervision will certainly be provided.

Your search topics of FAPE, LRE, and IDEA are leaning towards the more legal aspects of special ed.

Try looking into multiple inteligences. People also need to keep in mind that not everyone learns the same. People are not cookie cutter images of each other. Everyone has tallants, it's just our educational system has gotten away from helping kids discover their hidden tallants.

There are many famous people who have learning disabilities and have turned out very succesful in life. You may want to bring them into your paper...................

Sounds like you need to get out and do some interviews with the teachers and parents of special education kids.
