Who are your top 5 guitarists? What matters more, fire or skill? and has the music world produced anyone in the last 30 years who deserves to mentioned in the same breath as Hendrix? My top 5 are: 5- Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead), 4 - Joey Santiago (Pixies) 3 - Will Sergeant (Echo & The Bunnymen), 2 -Johnny Marr, 1 - David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)

lexo80: Will Sergeant riffing off the Beatles and Byrds? I think not! The scene from which the Bunnymen emerged in liverpool, in the late 70's, was about as far removed from that 60's thing as you can get. Will was/is more influenced by The Doors and Velvet Underground. Johnny Marr sounds like no one else, and this may be one of the reasons why there are no Smiths tribute bands!

The best guitarists should play with a passion that you feel when you hear them. Fair call on all the ones you named, three more for you: John Squire of the Stone Roses, especially on I am the Ressurection, it's amazing. Bernard Butler's playing on the first two Suede albums, like Squire before him, sounded like nothing else at the time. Currently, Matt Bellamy from Muse is my favourite guitarist as he can make music that's both beautiful and really heavy. Whether anyone can top Hendrix, well only time will tell.

5 - Robert Johnson.

4 - Charlie Christian.

3 - Derek Bailey.

2 - Andres Segovia.

1 - Jimi Hendrix.

What matters most is being musical. At the higher levels, there's no distinction between fire and skill. The only thing I could say about your top five is that none of them are much good, but that's mainly because I don't like any of the bands they belonged to, and I can't see any serious difference between, say, the guy in Echo and the Bunnymen and the guy in The Smiths (they're both riffing off the Beatles and the Byrds). No offence intended. (Seriously, though, you need to listen to more stuff.)
