I have an assignment to do an argumentative paper. The topic I have chosen is "special education" (pro). This may seem like a strange topic to some. I live in a small town where alot of people think that special ed is for "dumb" kids. Alot of parents are fighting the school system to have their kids removed from the program because of the lack of knowledge of what the program really is about. These kids are suffering because the parents are being ignorant and saying "I don't want my kid in the dumb class". I am a parent of an exceptional child and am totally for the program, but I am having trouble with my paper. I have ran searches on FAPE, Least Restrictive Environment and IDEA. But everything I have found is telling me that these acts & orginizations are letting the children down by not following through with funding & such. Can anyone help me with this? I need some positive words to work with. Thank you all.

First of all, special education is a provision of services to children with certain learning disabilities. It's not a "class." Most students who qualify for special education have an "average" to "above average" IQ and are considered learning disabled. The problem is that there is a glitch in the way their brains process information, so there is a gap between their ability level and what they have been able to learn. There are, of course, students with other types of disabilities, also.

Most students who are learning disabled are better off receiving services in the regular education classroom. This way they have more access to the general education curriculum than what they would have in a Resource Room setting (a special education class.) More and more people are beginning to understand that it is better to keep the students in this environment. The special education teacher can provide services in the regular education classroom, rather than pulling the child out and into a different environment. Whenever possible all students should be educated in the regular education classroom. (This is considered the least restrictive environment - LRE.)

There will always be some students with disabilities so severe, or so far below their same age peers that they will need to receive services in a different classroom. These separate classes can be Resource Rooms or self-contained classrooms. The Resource Rooms are usually for students at least three academic years or more below their actual grade level in a specific area. Self-contained classrooms are generally for students five or more academic years below their actual grade level.

A good starting point on the net might be taking a look at the website Council for Exceptional Children. I will include the link. Good luck with your paper. Feel free to email me if you like. I taught for several years in a Resource Room setting and in the regular education setting. I currently work in a self-contained setting where my middle school students are anywhere between five and eight academic years below their actual grade levels.

This is one of the hardest parts about working in special education. Sometimes, you have to deal with ignorance. Are parents whose children are in the program feeling this way because they feel that their child's needs aren't being met? Or, are they in denial still that their child may need the services? That can happen too, when parents get frustrated with the system that is supposed to help their child. The best thing you can do is educate the parents. You have to present the facts. This is what the program's target is, and this is what they are doing in class. Parents need to be involved in the process. Too many parents are out of the loop when it comes to what their child's rights are and getting what the child needs. You have to find all the positives you can about the program. Find statistics on the percentage of graduates who go on from the school... have children in the program write about what they like about their school, etc. Special education is not perfect... there are plenty of things they still need to iron out to make the program work efficiently, but where would these children be without it? Until 1975, no such program existed... these children were placed into psych wards or hospital homes for the duration of their lives. Torn away from their families, viewed as a "burden on society". Our programs today may not be perfect, but now we are at least recognizing the need for these programs, the benefits of an individualized education plan, and working on making it better.

There are no stupid childern if truth be known there are only bad teachers and childern need attention to understand what may seem easy to you and I but seems very difficult for them. In this world you have certain childern who are very smart and can learn anything when it is taught to them right off the bat. Then you have childern who need extra attention due to the fact that they simply don't comprehend what they are being told so they need to be shown and in a regular classroom enviroment there are too many childern to sit down on a one on one bases therefore this is why we need to keep this program in place for the childern who want to learn and deserve to have an education which they will fall back on over and over again for the rest of their lives. It is smarter to invest in your future generation now while they are young enough to really learn then to wait ten or twenty years only to come too realize that they have no clue what is really going on. The future is going to be global and we need to prepare our childern for that reality and this means giving them an education that helps them to understand and comprehend at a pace that means they can and will learn at. A classroom is only the begining of a lifetime adventure. I for one would not want to cheat my child out of an education even if it means that they get the extra attention they need while they are young. If keeping up with the Jones is more important then your child's education then we as a society are lost in the end because what this means is anyone who is willing to teach your child anything they want will do so and trust me there are people in this world who won't mind spending time to teach them bad things. Each of us can be a good teacher or a bad one the difference is who is willing to take the time to do so and what is it we want our childern to really learn. School is a place for learning and these programs have been put into place because there were childern who were being push through and not even learning how to count or read. They were being ignored and that is why others before you started to make sure that the next generation would have all the tools they needed because they themselves were cheated out of an education and didn't want anyone else to be done this way. Childern deserve to have the best education this country and all countries have to offer them. It is our duty to make sure all childern are givin an education that will in fact be worth having not one that simply looks good on paper and says hey I went to school and know nothing.

Not much I can add to Ann's discourse. Parents need to get over their pride.

Mainstreaming these types of children has been only semi-successful. They thrive in controlled conditions where they are allowed to proceed at a rate they can manage
