I'm having a VERY hard time with the verbal part on the GRE. I took it once and I didn't even get out of the 200s. I don't have trouble with the math but I need to get at least 1000 on this stinking thing. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Studying vocab will help you with 2/3 of the verbal, but what you need more is techniques for managing unfamiliar vocabulary - you are GUARANTEED to see words you don't know; the test is your reaction to the situation. If you can, invest in a full-length course. If not, look into a weekend express course, or an online course. Practicing with books is somewhat useful, but since the test is computerized, the most beneficial practice is online.
Finally, check out your deadlines. The GRE is changing in September to include, among other major changes, less vocabulary - you may do better on the new version, if that's an option for you.

Regardless, don't give up!

There are quite a few resources online where you can find GRE practice tests similar to original GRE tests. There you may find lot of questions very similar to actual GRE. If these tests are adaptive it is even better. try some known and good sources like GREedge and others. Try to take only those tests which provide solutions as well.

Try walking around with a ring of vocab cards from a GRE prep book like Word Smart for the GRE. Put the definition on one side and word on the other. Flip through them whenever you have a few minutes and use the words in talking to others or at least in your head when appropriate.

Have you tried a GRE prep course? Lots of colleges offer them. Also, did you buy the Princeton review book for the GRE? It comes with a code so you can do practice tests on their website. I drilled myself with flashcards for the verbal section and I think it really helped. Reading classic literature helps too, if you have the time. I'm going to take it again though because my math score was really low. I've heard that most people take it at least twice. Good luck, I'm sure that you can do it!
