A rescue, whether its a mixed breed or not. This way, if you go to a GOOD shelter that temprament tests, obedience trains, and gets to know the dog and it's background, they can tell you EXACTLY which one would be right for a specific family. Most even do "trial runs" just to make sure everything goes ok. You really can't answer this question by breed because all dogs are different no matter whay breed and it is all in how they have been raised and trained. SO definently, your best bet is to find a good shelter that does all that is stated above.

I don't think there is a certain brred for kids, but St Bernard might be an answer and they are too big to be in a home. So many of the breeds are high strung and nervousy types. But then each dog has its own personality. We once had a large boxer who adored our three children so much she wouldn't let us chase them if they started towards the street. She got the kids herself. She also didn't allow spanking. We had to put her out if we needed to discipline the kids. We had a big German Shepard that would watchthe babies carefully and not let them roll off a blanket when we were outside. A little cocker spaniel worried over nosing the baby back on the blanket and when the child started to become mobile just worried herself to death. We had a black laborador that was going to protect our daughter from any danger. He stood in front of the baby's swing and barked at the lawnmower and would have attacked it had it come close to the baby. Then we had mixed breeds or mongral dogs that were wonderful with the kids too. Golden retriever, poodle and cocker mixed, But my lhasa was not good with small kids, nor was a pomeranian. But I think it is strictly the dog. How is the mother? If the mom is a home kept pooch and good natured and you raise it to not allow the kids to hurt the pup until it is old enough to defend itself, you should wind up with a dog that will be a friend of your kids as long as it lives.

A Basenji! They love children! Any or most Basenji owners or breeders will tell you this. They are smaller dogs that honestly do really well with children. I own one and she would rather be around a child than an adult if there is any in the presence of her, no matter the age.(Infant's too) Check them out on the web for more info. and Petfinder.com is also another great place to find what you are looking for. There are a lot of dogs that are great with children.

Choosing a dog involves a lot of choices about yourself, your family, your living space, the amount of time you're going to give to training, the amount of time you're going to give to daily exercise, the amount of time you're willing to invest in grooming, the amount of energy you can live with, ect. Some really awesome dogs require up to 2 years to fully mature to adulthood, while others are just mellow from the get-go. Some really awesome dogs require daily grooming, and others hardly need grooming at all. Some great dogs shed a small horse twice a year, and still others hardly ever shed. Some terrific dogs require an hour or two of exercise every day to keep in balance, and others only need a few minutes a day. Do you have a fenced yard, or is the dog going to be cooped up in a small apartment? Are you going to be home with the dog and able to let it out regularly, or are they going to live alone most of the time? Are you going to leave the dog in the yard, or are you going to make them a part of your family and bring them into your "pack"? Are you willing to do potty training, or would a more mature dog suit your family better? Here is an article at Purina.com http://www.purina.com/dogs/puppies/Choosing.aspx about "Choosing the Perfect Puppy". If you're wanting to get a dog to teach your children responsibility, forget it ... parents teach responsibility not pets. It's not fair to a poor, defenseless creature to be at the mercy of someone that can't remember where they left their own shoes and socks, let alone whether they fed "Fido". Here is a list of age-appropriate pet jobs for children http://www.purina.com/dogs/puppies/ChildrensRoles.aspx to see if this fits in with your kids and dog picture. Last, but not least, you need to consider your financial standing. It costs between $1,500 and $2,000 for the first year of your puppy's life after you buy the puppy! That cost is spread between mudane things like supplies, food, shots, wormings, training classes and alteration surgery. Do you have the money to spend on a dog?
Having a dog can be very rewarding, but it is a lot of work and responsibility. Keep in mind that there are literally thousands of homeless pets waiting for their "forever family" all over the country, please try to use a shelter instead of a breeder.

shih tzu! they're adorable, affectionate and gentle. they're playful but not rough. and you're kids will love it. the only bad thing may be that you need to brush them a lot. but you could always just cut their hair short. they're real outgoing. my little dog gets along with everyone seriously. we have a cocker spaniel thats 12 years old and at first the cocker spaniel was jealous of our shih tzu pup but real fast they got along and became best friends. take note that our cocker spaniel is mean towards strangers (we didnt socialize her well as a pup) and protective.
heres some facts http://www.exclusivelyshitzu.com/shitzufacts.html
cocker spaniels are also good with children. they're great watch dogs but can be maybe over protective or at least ours is. when i was little and would fall she'd come running to see if i was ok.
german shepherds are good too. http://www.nsgsdc.com/breed_about.shtml

a chiwawa is easy to take care of. but most of the time the children will harass the chiwawa because its so small and they can.
pretty much all dogs are good. like the saying goes.
bad dogs aren't born bad. the thing you should look for mostly is a dog that is easier to take care of and wont shed so much.
