I do not. I was homeless at one time and let me tell you, in the town I live in there is a ton of ways to eat 3 full meals a day, get showers, get your mail, get cloths, help with finding jobs, etc. so..NO I don't hand out anymore.

I think ones money is better spent on a yearly or monthyl donation to a recognized charity which assists homeless people in finding jobs and homes than it is to give most panhandlers money. But, I also think it's also important to remember random acts of kindness should occassionally apply to street people as well as the guy behind you at Starbucks... So sometimes, in a random karmic spree, it can't hurt to hand over a few bucks, particularly if they've got a story that you actually believe might not be a scam... It might not be! (...and if it turns out it was, just consider it a tip for a good street show...)

I am shocked and appalled by some of the answers on here. I work voluntary for an agency in Sydney Australia and deal with homeless people on a day to day basis. It is true some are there by choice, but some are also the product of tragic circumstances like domestic violence, child abuse, Drug addicted parents and mental illness. I suggest before you pass judgement on the vulnerable you take a long hard look at your own selfish lifestyle. Thankfully in Australia we have many programs and support systems in place to assist the less fortunate into getting their lives on track. As an owner of a business I urge others to give these people a go, and accept the fact that life doesn't always work out for some, but this is not to suggest they don't have anything to offer.

Well having looked at some of the previous answers, maybe you should have called this question "Heartless in America?" Many people fall through the cracks of the social safety net.And it could happen to anybody, maybe you.I spent a night on the street once when it was -30 C.It royally sucks.I was lucky I found an apartment building with a storage room I could crash in for a few hours and not freeze to death.I don't know what I would have done had it not been for the kindness of a stranger who let me in a secure building.Whoever you are thank you.You saved my life.I can't repay him,but I can do for others what has been done for me.You can live in the world of your choice one where people help each other or one of hate ,fear and suffering.I will always choose the former and pray you will too.

" "Dan, no longer all human beings individuals are pigs. we've a community of philanthropy throughout the time of this land." With very few exceptions, that community money the arts, PBS, and such. apart from Pres. Jimmy Carter's efforts little or no is finished to feed the hungry, grant sufficient scientific look after the working undesirable, housing for the homeless. this is time for the US to scrub the sh!t off their own doorstep and butt out of the affairs of different countries. As a " Superpower" the US has little or no time left if it would not start to look inward. Already too plenty administration has been transferred to China. it may desire to already be too previous via opposite what has occurred. It ought to be very complicated for the asker and different individuals to work out the decadence around them, the obsession with worldwide domination, the money wasted on area probes(so Pluto isn't a planet, who cares?) that would not positioned nutrition on the tables of united statesa. or a roof over one individuals head. It stuns me that maximum of human beings in the u . s . a . think of each and every person else in the worldwide is chomping on the bit to grow to be an American. As a Canadian, I care very plenty for individuals and that i will experience their frustration and it rather is heartbreaking. sufficient mentioned, i'm happy i became born north of the border. could God help united statesa..

The right answer is to donate to the food bank in your community. The cynical, but often correct answer to giving to a panhandler is that he is going to spend it on booze or drugs. Also, selfishly, if you cut a check to the food bank, you get a tax write off. Nothing like getting Uncle Sam's help for doing a good deed.

No. I used to, but not any more.
I find it hard to believe that with all the resources we have, including welfare, families, charity, missions, churches, etc. that anyone would have to be homeless unless they were mentally ill or boozers or addicted to something. In the latter 2 cases, you know where the money would go, so why bother.

Depends on how they look-- if they are standing there with a beer can-- no money.
However, if its a female - i know that the womens shelters only accept them only if there is family violence, and they truly have nowhere to go.
Alot of them are mentally incapable of getting help, and have no one to help them.
