Why are you waiting until you think you have a virus to get protected? Go to the Microsoft Security Website and download and run the monthly Malicious Software Removal Tool. Once you have gotten rid of the Virus, Go into System by right clicking on My Computer and Selecting Properties, then in the dialog box which appears click on the System Restore Tab. On this tab click the checkbox to turn off System Restore, then reboot and go back into System Properties, back to the System Restore Tab and turn System Restore back on.
You see, viruses hide in the images the System takes every day and which is used in System Restore when restoring your system back to a previous state. By turning off System Restore and then turning it back on, you clear all the restore points and you are left with a clean system.
Now download and use a good Security Suite or an Anti-Virus Program. Go here:
http://www.cnet.com/downloads
This site has a lot of freeware and shareware. At the top right corner is a search box to search the site for particular programs. Put in Anti-Virus and click Search or Go, whichever starts the search and you will be taken to a page with a list of many different freeware and shareware Anit-Virus programs, Click on ones which are of interest to you and then read the user reviews provided.
User reviews are great for deciding if a certain software is something we actually want on our system, before actually installing it. I seldom use software which is without a certain number of reviews and a level of stars. I may not be adventerous but at least my system is safe. lol
I think it is good for each of us to do some checking for ourselves regarding what types of software and what features it has that meet our own personal preferences. This site is a good way to do that.
Good luck and have a nice evening.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

http://www.avast.com I use Avast free for home personal use for nine plus years in two computers. Never had one virus.
They will ask you for your email address so they can send you a free key that is good for one year. After the one year, just request a new key. The corporate version is the same, they just make corporate pay. Has an excellent background scanner that really works in real time to catch and destroy a virus before entering your system. Plus you get two or three times per day auto updates. Excellent free home for person use antivirus program.
