G'day Fistoflegend22,

Thank you for your question.

The signing of Alfonso Soriano looks a good one albeit he is expensive. The best evidence of how good the offseason has been is how well they play next season.

Regards

I agree with the general sentiments as everyone else that time will tell. The key will be what that starting pitching will look like on Opening Day. The offense certainly had its problems, but not as big as the probs with the rotation. I'm reading that the Hendry is looking at 2nd tier starters and not Schmidt & Zito. Maybe the thought is that those guys will demand say $10M to $15M a year, giving you say a B+, while middle tier guys like Lilly or Marquis gives you maybe a B-, for half the price. I'm not saying I feel that way, but as a Die-hard Cub fan, I'm trying to think like Hendry. There are also talks about the Cubs making a trade or two for the starting pitching they need.

Specifically addressing the offense, I'm happy about the pick up of Soriano, don't get me wrong. However, I can't stop thinking about that #2 spot in the order. Who's it gonna be? I'm actually considering writing to Carrie what's her name (the Cubs beat writer) to ask her about it. A left-handed hitting, consistent .300 hitter would fit beautifully in that batting order between Soriano & Lee. I don't think that guy is Izturis, Jones, or even the right handed hitting Theriot. I guess if I could wish for anything, I'm also wishing for that need to be addressed as well. Unfortunately, there weren’t really any guys on the FA market that jumped out at me as potentially grabs. I don’t want JD Drew.

Not to mention, the closer role should really entail some auditioning instead of just trusting the Dumpster. Cotts, Howry, or "you know who" may also factor in the picture. ...or, look to Hendry again to make a deal.

All-in-all, nice start but a lot, A LOT, A WHOLE bunch of work left to be done if they truly want to buy a 2007 contender.

yes. i'm a cub fan but we still need some pitching. I like Zambrano and hill but you still need 2-3 starters. kerry wood should close. he should use his talent. they pretty much have the best offense in the NL with a current opening day lineup that has 651 RBI. only 8 hitters. Don't forget about Zambrano. Opening day lineup: http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article_perspectives.jsp?ymd=20061119&content_id=1743543&vkey=perspectives&fext=.jsp

i onced asked does he have not got any guts to bypass after peavy. they could've used him(different than until he have been given injured). i don't see why he retains his activity the two yet possibly the Cubs front place of work likes him as GM.

So far, so good.

Get some decent pitching and you should be able to play My Tigers in Oct. 2007.

Signed Soriano, that's more than he did all the other years he's been manager with the Cubs, so yeah, duh.
