50/50 software and hardware based - Pocket PC has PALM beat. Pocket PC such as the HP hx2000 series have finger print readers which really work and will not be hacked by photo copies of finger prints ran over them. Then on the software side you can encrypt you devices data (internal and removable) to military level protection . Palm offers non of this and can get hacked even if it is fully locked and ran over by a tank....

Reliability depends on the type of media the device uses, not the operating system. Obviously, solid state based ones are far more reliable than micro-harddisk based ones.

Keep in mind, if you lose the device or get it stolen, reliability of the device does not matter. You lose your data regardless. I suggest you do not carry any *sensitive* data in your portable device and *important* data be backed up and stored elsewhere.

I am prone to agree with Big Daddy. I have an HX2755. I keep my important data on my SD card and frequently back it up. I also back it up on my home computer regularly. I have sensitive information and had to have my handheld approved by many layers at work in order to be able to use it and synchronize it and exchange files at work. I was not able to get approval with my previous PDA, which was also an hp but did not have the security features this one has. I also use a password protected portable UPS key ring drive for documents that are important. It is small but a good way to store information. Inexpensive and fits easily into your home safe.
