What several have listed are actually conservative ideals. The republican party is closer to conservatism than the present democrat party, but still not conservative. Oddly, the democrats in the day of JFK were more conservative than the republican party is today.

Unfortunately the democrat party has gone off the left end of the spectrum and the republicans are heading there too. We probably need a strong conservative third party if we want to save this country.

The Conservative core set of ideas, which many Republicans share, but have been forgotten by many in the GOP Congress, are:

1. Integrity
2. Personal Responsibility
3. Less Taxes
4. Less gov't spending
5. Less government
6. Less regulation on business.
7. Social Security Reform
8. Strong National Defense
9. Confronting our enemies, not appeasing them.
10. Tax reform and simplification
11. Energy independence through increasing supply.
12. Encouraging people to save for their own retirement.

That's my list anyway, and I'm sure I'm still missing some things.

To Truthseeker, I already acknowled that many of these principles have been abandoned by the GOP in power. I'm saying that these are GOP values, and we will win again when we run candidates who actually believe in them and will follow them. When running on them, the GOP was swept into power in 1994. So was Reagan in 1980.

Also, real income is on the way back up, starting in 2004 and more so in 2005. This is after twin economic blows of the dot.com bubble bursting (which hit unrealistically high bubble time wages really hard) and 9/11.

Contrary to what the rank and file are telling you, they are not even close to what they claim to believe in.

For example with Pancakes, they do not have fiscal responsibility. Five of the highest deficits in U.S. history have occured in the past 6 years. The debt has nearly doubled in the past 6 years under all Republican leadership. How is this in any way fiscally responsible?
We give huge tax credits to Oil Corporations. There is no retirement security, with or without SS being privatized.
Health care is not affordable. It has nearly doubled in the last 6 years. We are not winning the war on terror, we are taking away resources from the war on terror with the war in Iraq.

Sorry Kevin, there is no integrity. There is corruption coming out of the woodwork. Ever hear of Jack Abramhoff? How can you mention less government? The U.S. government is bigger today than at any time in its history. What does attacking Iraq have to do with a strong national defense. It has weakened it. Iraq was not our enemy. There was no imminent threat. It is common knowledge. Tax reform would be great. Less taxes would be great, but you can't have that with a Repbublican Congress and President with out of control spending habits. And as far as retiremnent goes, people don't have enough after paying the bills to save for retirement. "Real income" is down each of the last 5 years. that greatly affects anyones ability to save.

what you are hearing from the Republicans sounds really good, but at this point , it is a pipe dream at best.

Fiscal accountability and responsibility.
Immigration policy that protects our borders.
Oil independence.
Simplified tax code.
Retirement security.
Reducing the size of government.
Affordable health care. Not government sponsered.
Supporting our hard working troops and winning the war on terror.
Basically, everything democrats are against.

Power is good, greed is good. = Core ideas. Cheating or lying to get them - good.
Gerrymandering and locking in a powerbase in order to acquire more power and wealth = agenda.
