Is the constipation a one-off thing or a regualr occurence?
Take lots of water with ur meals, eat lots of fruits as well as foods rich in fibre & bran. Chew food slowly to allow time for digestion.
If its a one of thing, take a laxative with aluminium with it if u have dyspepsia with it but don't take that if u have any peptic or duodenal ulcer.
if in doubt, pls visit ur GP

I would avoid laxatives or other pills.
Try something tasty that will help clean you out. Here's one thing:
Get a bag of baby spinach (the pre-washed kind). I a frying pan or wok, put in 4 - 6 tablespoons of peanut oil (olive oil will work well if you're allergic to nuts) with 2 medium cloves of garlic that have been coarsely chopped.
Heat the oil until wavey when swirled in the pan. Add the garlic and cook until you smell the garlic. Add the spinach and stir fry until the spinach is soft (about 3 minutes or so).
Enjoy with a bowl of multi-grain rice (or rice mixed with wild rice and peanuts or pine nuts). Enjoy with a glass of prune juice.
Yum!

Here's an emergency procedure:Take two tbsps of olive oil, or 1 tbsp of castor oil. Then drink a couple of large mugs of hot herbal tea (not regular black teas), or just plain hot water with a bit of lemon in it.
After two hours, have a bowl of crunchy cereal mixed with yoghurt.
Then after another couple of hours, have a banana and two large glasses of water.
But if you're generally prone to constipation, then you should take fibre - be it psyllium or bran - daily. You must also drink lots of fluids, be it juice or water, every day.
Finally, while straining in the WC with dry stools, put your hands together in front of your chest, locking your fingers, with your elbows at shoulder level. Then, turn your upper body from side to side, in order to loosen up any blockages straining to find its way out of your system.
You should also have colonic irrigation a couple of times per year, to alleviate your condition.

The best thing to do is drink at least a half a glass of prune juice every morning or if you prefer drink the prune juice just before going to bed at night. Also have plenty of fruits and vegetables in your diet.

Drink plenty of water and get away from the sodas. The sugar in them will really mess up your kidneys over time. Start eating more leafy vegetables and fish. Eat less red meat too. Don't expect an overnight solution. It will take a few days.

the best natural way (b/c laxatives make me feel sick):
put about 4 prunes in a cup, fill with boiled water.
wait for it to cool down till you can drink it (abt three mins) and drink the water, which will have the prune fibres floating around. then eat the prunes at the end.
If within 24 hours you dont have bowel movement you dont have to choose me as best answer.
but you will!

Should discuss the new onset of constipation with your physician. Usually no biggie, like improper diet, but may indicate underlying pathology?
Any weight loss?
Blood in stool?
Fever?
If none of the above, prob. your diet, try adding fiber.

talk to your doctor if regular occurance but try a fibre bulking out agent for now (have a chat with the pharamisist about it), plus eatting prunes is suppposed to help but generally including lots of water, soluble and insoluble fibre sources in your diet might help.

If you can handle them, Jalapenos do a fantastic job. But you'll be screaming for ice cream during the elimination process:)
