Yeah....I have a Netgear DG834...reasonably priced, easy to set up, and so far (touch wood) no problems.

Basically you can use a router to protect your computer because routers have built-in firewalls on it. It is also safe from hackers since they cannot access the modem because the router will be the one to assign an IP address to your computer. I would suggest using 2wire or Cisco. these are the best products that I know that doesnt have any issues.

a router is a hardware firewall, in its core essence, because its not "inside" your computer it has its own mac address and also will generate an ip address for whatever is connected to it, so yes it can help protect your 1 and only pc, but why spend the cash when you don't really need to?
It doesn't matter which one you buy, just get one you can afford if your gonna get one at all

I prefer the older Netgear routers for protecting things. They are quite heavy, made of metal, and make an awesome club when swung by the cat 5 cables. Should drive off any assailant forthwith!

i use my router to enable the other computer ( a laptop ) to have internet access. if you only have one pc, then why would you need a router. In fact I had a wireless card before I had cable and i was getting free service from a person next door because they did not have the security enabled....so I don't think so, in answer to your question.
