check out some books. Some good ones are "Technical Manuel and Dictionary of Classical Ballet" by Gail Grant; "Ballet Basics" by Sandra Noll Hammond; and "Ballet 101: A Complete Guide to Learning and Loving the Ballet" Robert Greskovic. Videos help too, because then you can see what the steps are supposed to look like. "The Ballet Workout", "Ballet Class For Beginners", "Ballet with Style Video", and the "Contemporary Ballet Video" are all good too. I really do encourage you to enroll in a class, though, books and videos don't help with technique. Good Luck!

I really don't think you can learn ballet by yourself. It's something where you have to have a teacher looking at you and how you are holding your body to make sure you have the positions right.

It's best to just enrol in a class. If you teach yourself you may get good but there will always be hang-ups.

it would be hard to teach yourself

but just remember these things:
extended arms
point feet
balance
good stretching
nice smile
graceful
spot or focus when turning
good supporting or standing leg
long arms and hands
