It's generally good.

There were not too many options for a power hitting outfielder, since Soriano was getting overpaid to go to Chicago and Lee said he doesn't want to play on the west coast. The Dodgers aren't going to find a good power hitter easily in this post steroids era, and so the second best option is building a team with speed and little ball like before the 80's.

While Pierre doesn't have a great OBP, his stats compare very favorably to Carl Crawford, who is generally regarded as a desirable player. I couldn't believe this when I saw it but:

G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB BA OBP SLG
Pierre 162 699 87 204 32 13 3 40 58 .292 .330 .388
Crawford 151 600 89 183 20 16 18 77 58 .305 .348 .482

Sure Pierre has much less power and was not as in as many RBI situations as Crawford did, but Pierre batted leadoff while Crawford hit 3rd. Pierre came at much less of a cost than Crawford will when he hits free agency.

Regarding his low number of runs scored last year, Pierre played for a really bad Chicago team. There were games last year that Todd Walker hit third, and Michael Barrett hit cleanup, because Aramis Ramirez was hitting in the low .200s for a good part of last year. He was not going to score many runs for such a bad team no matter how much he got on base.

Also, there was the issue of the contract situation regarding Furcal. While Furcal fills the leadoff hitters role now, he signed a relatively short deal on purpose so he has another chance at free agency in his prime. When his deal expires, the Dodgers may be able to resign him. With Pierre, the Dodgers will still have a good leadoff hitter.

Also, after the Milton Bradley blow up, McCourt said that he wants a team with good guys who have character. Colletti praised Nomar's character a lot and Pierre is supposed to be a good guy in the clubhouse who works hard and is a team leader. With all of the kids the Dodgers are bringing up, they need a stable veteran presence. Having guys like Kent, Nomar, and Pierre teach the young guys the right way to play sets up a future of players who work hard, don't showboat, and just want to win. There is a reason the Dodgers traded away super prospect Guzman. They want to build their team with good guys and no self centered Barry Bonds like players who play only for their next contract.

While we all would have wanted to see a Soriano or Manny Ramirez deal, (or Mickey Mantle in center), it's the best move the Dodgers could have made.

G.M. Ned Colleti is trying to emanulate the White Sox philosphy of having speed in the lineup and power in the middle. Furcal and Pierre maybe the premier 1-2 punch on the top of the lineup and they still have lots of speed to burn (95 SB combine in 2006, both under 30 years old, both in top 10 NL in SB in 2006). If this strategy works in Lofton, this could work better in Pierre. Pierre has been healthy for much of his career and with Furcal staying only for two more years, Pierre makes a great insurance if they don't resign Furcal. Most power player doesn't want to play in the West Coast, so I don't blame the Dodgers to go on a different philosophy. Even though Pierre deal calls for 9 million a year, the Dodgers still have space for a big contract to sign a slugger or a big-time pitcher with J.D. Drew gone, so there still hope.

Absolutely horrible - his OBP the past 2 seasons has been .326 and .330. I don't care how fast you are - if you can't get on base, then you're not going to steal many or score a lot of runs. He had only 87 runs this season, a horrible number for a leadoff guy who played in all 162 games.

He has no power, and doesn't get on base enough for a leadoff hitter. Paying $9 million for a guy like this is not a smart move.

Pierre is a good signing for the Dodgers. Speed and great on-base percentage. He's coming off a great season and plays a good center field.

Take it from a poor old Cubs fan, it's ok if you need a fast leadoff man, but I am going to have to say bad.

Three years ago with the Marlins he hit about a 290 average, but in the first half of the season last year with the Cubs, he hit 231.

For other stats of Pierre's go to www.chicagocubs.com/statistics, and look up the past year's stats for Pierre. On that website you could also compare his stats with other people's stats.

Good...he's cheaper than JD Drew and nowhere near as fragile. No power, but with him and Furcal at the top of the line up, it'll create a lot of opportunities for Kent and Garciaparra to drive in runs. It was just a blessing when JD Drew turned down his option.

The player is good, but common 9 million for a guy who hit singles. We already have a leadoff in furcal, who now he is expected 2 be the #2 hitter because he has more power, how will he handle that new role??? Also we neede more of a power hitter like Lee. He is a good hitter, and 300avg hitter, don't get me wrong, but 4, 9 mill, i just dont think he was the best option.

Depends on what they do next. If they dont add a big bat to knock him in its a stupid move cause they already have furcal. But if they add lets say Carlos Lee then you have Pierre and Furcal causing havoc on the basepads and Kent, Lee and hopefully a big bat (Carlos Lee).

Good signing. He's got speed, a good leadoff hitter, can get on base and steal bases. And he's got average defense.

being a cub fan, good, but overpaid. he couldn't hit the ball out the park if you put it on a tee. Literatlly. It gets annoying. He's still a very good player and is fast.
