what type of schooling do i have to do to become a zookeeper?

is it a hard job to get? does it pay well? im a single mom right now living with my parents. im 29. i have never worked before and im in college. i really want to work with animals and it hink zoologoy would be the best for me but im not sure on how to get there.

To simplify, you could always switch your major in college to zoology. If your college does not have such a program, there are many in the USA that does. Additionally, you may want to visit different zoo's to see if they would have an apprentice program, an internship, or even volunteer. All are great ways to get your foot in the door. You can always apply directly at a zoo and gain experience in cleaning cages or helping visitors. I hope that this helps!

You could probably check out the internet for universities which offer courses in zoology. You might even call your local zoo and try to make an appointment to talk with someone there. However, as an "apprentice" in a zoo ...... you may have to deal with all kinds of unpleasant jobs, including cleaning out animal cages ........ so, be prepared.

Most workers are trained on the job, but employers generally prefer to hire people who have some experience with animals; some jobs require a bachelor’s degree in biology, animal science, or a related field.

It DOES NOT PAY well, I think the most you could make is about $15.00 an hour.

Have you worked with a veterinarian? Start small and work up. Have you been around large animals before, horses & cows etc.
I'll be willing to bet that to work with zoo-class animals you have to have a specialty field of study, or be a feeder. A feeder was killed by a tiger a few years ago at the Hermann Park Zoological Garden in Houston, Tx. Good luck. Animals need care in capivity. It's a worthy field.
