technicaly, when you make something, you automaticly own the rights to it. when you make something you have the "copy rights" to it. if you want to prove that it is your work, there are a few things that you can do. one, pocibly the simpilest, is to get a full and complete copy of the original work, this means you include ALL of the info. I think you then date it, sign it, and have "whitnesses" sign it as well, perhaps include contact info for integrety, seal it up, and send it to yourself through FIRST CLASS MAIL it couldnt hurt to send more than one copy just so you have extras. first class mail is the more expensive one that requires a signature on delivery. the post office dates and codes the envelope i think they put a tamper evident seal on it as well. this proves that the us government has receved and procesed your work on the date on the envelope. just keep it somewhere safe and never tamper with any of it or you will compromise it's integrity. you have just proven the latest date that you could have produced your work and if anyone says otherwise, you can go to court and open the envelope in front of the judge to prove that everything in it was placed in it on the date of it's mailing. alot of people do this and it is safe and reliable. the other way that i know of is to go to the patent office and have it copy righted. i have never done this and dont know how it is done exactly but it is undoubtobly going to work.

It is copyrighted only in Ireland. You would need to copyright it with the US Federal government for protection in any US state or territory. Also you would need to copyright it in the UK and all other places you want for protection. However, given the fact the internet is being used to illegally downloaded music from any part in the world, my friend, you are in for a HUGE task, and unfortunately there is no guarantee that some copyright infringement may go unnoticed. Hence the switch from many records deals where the music is being sold through ITunes or some other sort of device with an Ipod because people are hardly buying CD's anymore...

Do a search for copyright office they should have this info. Also there are organisations like CARFAC that help artists with copyright and other legal issues .Technically the creator is automatically protected when work is completed with or without the copyright notice appearing on or attached to the work but proving copyright ownership is another matter whether or not work is registered.Hope this helps!P.S The mail it to yourself trick is as old as the hills and there are cases where it did not work.Seems people have gotten better at tampering with mail over the years .Copyright law is constantly being redifined as new cases go to court and in different countries it can vary depending on precedent set there.

The US Copyright Office is part of the Library of Congress. You can find their website easily...and it has detailed instructions and links to international sites, including the World Intellectual Property Organization.
