The best way is to pick it up gently around the middle (with your thumb and forefinger just behind it's front legs). However, until it's used to you, it might try to bite you. To avoid bites, make sure you wash your hands first, so they don't smell like food or other things you've handled.

You can also "scruff" the hamster, like a cat. There is a patch of loose skin between the shoulder blates, similar to a cat. You can pick the hamster up by this, which makes it much more difficult for them to bite you. However this is just for moving the critter from it's cage to your hand, etc... not a way to actually hold it for a long period.

When holding it, try to keep your hand flat so your fingertips/knuckles, etc aren't sticking up making a nice little chew toy. :) We used to do the "hand over hand" thing... hold both hands flat and continually put one hand in front of the other as the hamster walks... it's like a human treadmill. :)

If you do get bit (and you will eventually... ) just don't give up. They need to be handled regularly if you want them to be friendly. Ours used to be so friendly we could put Barbie clothes on them and carry them around in our pockets! I haven't had one THAT friendly in many many years... but yeah. :)

I would recommend lifting it up from the belly if all possible, the spikes dont hurt that much when they roll into a ball in your hand, pretty much the only way i know of, although some expert probably knows the right way.

OK wash your hands and then let it smell your hand. and the way that i scoop up my hamster is by taking you hands on each side of his/he body and then scoop it up like water in your hands. or you can try by GENTLY putting one finger underneath its front paws then use the rest of your hand to hold its body. or you can use one hande and GENTALY pick it up by it's front feet and belly but i find that it can hurt your hamster. I hope this helped a bit
