The nile river was important in Egypt one because it was THE major water source in Egypt. No other place to get water. Two, the Nile was necessary for the flooding to occur each year to make the basin fertile to grow the crops etc needed for a civilization like the Egyptians to thrive. Third, it was a source of irrigation during the dry times so the crops could be watered. As you know it did not rain much in the desert.
Also, on a side note, the Nile came in to play for religious purposes. If someone committed a crime they would throw a person in and let the Nile decide if he/she lived or died. When in reality if the person could swim there shouldn't be a problem. Hope this helps.

Check out a satellite image of Egypt. Most of the country is sand, but there's a long, narrow strip of blue surrounded by brilliant green. That is why the Nile is so important. There are no other major sources of water in that area. The Nile also traditionally flooded on a very stable schedule, and those floods brought in incredibly fertile silt. The ancient Egyptians were able to build such an advanced civilization because they were very wealthy, and that wealth was largely due to the fertility of its soils. Nowadays, the Nile is dammed, but it still provides the country with fresh water, and now it also provides electricity through those dams.
