My recommendation is "Justin Thyme" - a book I've just finished reading and am recommending to everyone. It's aimed at kids (like Harry Potter) but probably has a cross-over adult appeal too, (at least, for those who enjoy the likes of Pullman, Stroud, Paolini or Rowling). It's part science fiction part fantasy ... sort of science-fantasy! The chapters are interspersed with time travel theories. Well, I enjoyed it anyway. Here's a link to it on Amazon

There's a web site too - might be worth checking out.

You'd love "The Last Apprentice." It has the same fantasy feel as Eragon and Harry Potter, but is a little darker. You may also want to try "The Lightning Theif" by Rick Riordan. It is about the son of Poseidon, the God of the Sea. It's set in modern-day times and the writer is quirky and funny. You'd also love "Maximum Ride" by James Patterson and "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card. All of these books are very fast-paced and have either science fiction or fantasy elements.
I think you'll find Cornelia Funke, Robert Jordan, and Terry Brooks very slow. These writers tend to appeal more to older adults who enjoy science fiction and fantasy.

Try "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card. Years ago, Earth was attacked by aliens, and only through luck and one brilliant man were we able to defeat them. Knowing that this was only the first attack, the world leaders decided to find someone who could become the tactical genius that was needed. They chose Andrew Wiggin - Ender - a six year old boy. The book is fantastic, and I recommend it to everyone I know (and many people I don't know). It's the first in a series. This is an extremely well loved book - on Amazon it has 4 1/2 stars with over 2,000 reviewers.

Lord of the Rings, J R R Tolkein
Start with The Hobbit, same author.
I know this isn't the same genre, but it's a very short read and it's actually very, very good writing.
Old Man and the Sea by Earnest Hemmingway. You should be able to read it in a couple hours.

Try to go for a different genre....like romance. I suggest books by Nicholas Sparks. He wrote The Notebook and A Walk to Remember. Have you seen those movies? Anyway, his books are totally awesome and I guarantee you will like them.
