"While I know that voting for these awards is primarily based on differing opinions and statistical debates, it's also part of what makes baseball such a great sport," Jeter said in a statement released by the Yankees.

"Having said that, I'm flattered and honored to have been considered for the American League Most Valuable Player Award. I want to congratulate Justin Morneau on this well-deserved honor. He is a special player, and I suspect this won't be the last time you will hear his name mentioned when awards are being passed out.

"You've heard me say it a thousand times, but winning the World Series for the New York Yankees continues to be my main focus. There is no individual award that can compare with a championship trophy, and I look forward to working towards that challenge again in 2007."

So typical Jeter......

That's why he's a MVP everyday!

Jeter is the classiest and such a nice person. I met him in Baltimore last year on a Monday after his story ran on 60 minutes about death threats he was getting for dating white women. His body guards didn't want to let my hubby and I near him, but he told them to leave us alone and he took pictures and signed autographs. He even took time to talk with my hubby about the Yankees. He is so modest.

This year we talked with him again and his parents were with him. They raised him right!

You are right he is MVP everyday on and off the field.

Jeter is the type of player MLB needs, not the Manny Ramirez's who demand trades and play half *ss. Jeter works hit butt off every minute he is on the field and is also a very humble person. He realizes the gifts he has is truly a blessing, while most other major leaguers take it for granted and act like Gods among mortals.

Derek Jeter, the class of Major League Baseball
'nuff said.

I'm a diehard Red Sox fan. Over the years I have always enjoyed ripping on Jeter. Calling him the best 2nd baseman in the league.
Fact is he's one of the greatest players I've ever seen. He's also as classy as it gets. He, indeed, was deserving of the MVP of the AL this year.

Cheers!

No one can legitimately question his class, heart or commitment.

I think most people would grudgingly admit they like him, even though he's a Yankee.

It was deservedly a close race.

I'm an Angel fan, and I'd take Jeter in heartbeat on the halos.

He is the classiest player in baseball and he deserved the award but he didn't get mad about not winning. He is a true champion and a great Yankee.
