Well, I have an opportunity to go to New York for 4 days with some people in my school. But, I live across teh country from New York, and if I go, we'll be flying. The problem is...I'm terrified of flying! My friend'll be going if the club[of people who are going on the trip(im not sure if we'll still be going but it will be a higher price if we don't get 40 ppl] gets 40 ppl. I really want to go! but(there's that word "but" again) WHAT DO I DO ABOUT MY HORRIBLE FEAR OF FLYING?????????????????? I've flown before when I moved from the eastern end of the country to this end. but WHAT DO I DO? I'm sooooo horrified of flying! any suggestions?

You know what REALLY made me feel better?
One time at church we were playing a true or false game, so that statement was "More people get killed by a donkey kicking them off their back then when people get killed in a plane crash" It was true :]]

try to get one of those airborne pills, they calm queeziness down. then, try to bring a small blanket or something that remoinds you of home that will comfort you. remember, these days, FLYING IS THE SAFEST POSSIBLE WAY OF TRANSPORTATION!
try to go to sleep once you gety on the plane,(make sure the flight attendants can see your seatbelt otherwise theyll wake you up) and try to think of positive things during the flight. if you wake up, try to watch the move or listen to the radio.
dont ocus on your fear of flying, focus on how much fun you're having with all your friends and how much fun you'll have when you get there. It's only about a 5 hour flight, but think of the positives! at least it wont take you like 3 weeks to drive!
ps, my dad is a pilot, so be reassured im not some lunatic trying to give you false advice like some peoplewho have no idea what they're talking about!
good luck on your flight and have fun!

It's hard for me to say because I don't have that fear. Can you talk yourself into it? Really, it's safer than driving. As you now know, it's safer than donkeys. If you think of it that way there is nothing to be afraid of. Do you realize how many planes take off and land every day? Take a look at the flights when you're at the airport. A lot, and that's just one airport, one day.
I travel probably twice times a month on average, sometimes a lot more. Never had any problems, except occasional (but rare) turbulence, which can get scary, but just realize that the odds of anything bad happening are so slim as to be unworthy of any serious concern. Anyway, don't worry, it'll be just fine. Once you are in New York (my favorite city) you won't regret it at all.

Check into some facts about airplanes. They are very safe, safer than driving, almost the safest place a human being can be. For example, there is something like 7 consecutive major systems of the plane that have to ALL fail in order for a plane to fall out of the sky. The likelihood of this happening is almost impossible. Talk to someone who knows about planes so you have some reasons to tell yourself that it's safe, and then...get xanex :)

i was the same way!! I swore to myself that i would NEVER fly.. ever. But i had a chance to go to Florida for a week for Spring Break. It actually wasnt too bad.. I was definately scared, but I got through it. Sit near the window (it doesnt sound fun, but it actually helps a lot). If you like to read.. read the entire time you are on the plane.. or play a video game or something like that. It will be ok.. its not AS bad that I thought it would be.
If all else fails, you could always ask your doctor for some relaxers.. i got some when I went to Florida, but i didnt use them.
Good luck.. and it will be alright, i promise. If i can do it, you can do it.

I am totally over my awful fear of flying after flying across the country about five times. If you go with your friends, you can focus on them. Don't let this fear deprive you of an experience of a lifetime.

You are not alone. I've flown so much (business and pleasure) I detest flying. The way I got over it is to think positive, tell myself it is the safest way to travel long distances. Recently my biggest complaint (bi*ch) is the crap getting to the airport, checking bags, claiming bags at the destination, clearing security, full flights, etc. I concentrate on all that rather than the flying itself.

this is how my mom and sister are. You just need to remind yourself nothing bad is going to happen, after the terrorist attacts ect. ppl check the planes a billion times b4 anyone can go on, they make sure the pilot is TOP NOTCH, and they check everyone before they go on. nothing can happen to you these days. besides you have a higher risk of something happening on your way to the airport than you do on the plane.

bring something that will take ur mind off the fact that u r flying. music games, or just sleep through the flight.
and also, u don't have to be so scared. driving a car is more likely to put you in harms way, more then flying

You could bring a comforting blanket/pillow, games, magazines, music...things to distract you and keep you busy while on the plane. If all else fails, a very strong muscle relaxer/sleeping pill.

Just take a deep breath and realize that fear of something is always in your head. Say to yourself that nothing bad is going to happen, cause it won't!
