Is it?

Most nations have been great at some point during history.

For me, the greatest nations are those that do not claim to be because they realise that we all have our strengths and weaknesses.

But there is nothing wrong with being proud to be British, or anything else.

As for the American war of independence, Britain was busy fighting far more important wars at the time elsewhere. America being of little consequence at the time, who only prospered because of the first and second world war that devastated Europe, was left to the mercenaries that were employed, the majority were not British soldiers, had they have been, history may have been different. Our forces were far superior at that time.

Hold your horses dear! GB is not the greatest nation on the planet! GB has great power for such a long time because of its wars. But this is not the criteria for being the Greatest Nation on the WHOLE PLANET!
Have a nice day

Are you talking about G8? Those are in power longer within last centuries, what is normal, once money rule the world and societies need several generations to be replaced.
Sure, All G8 have less time in power than ancient empires/nations/cultures, like Persians, Tracians, Egiptians, Romans, Chinese, Mongolians, Past islam......

I dont really think were that "great" Most of the things that are going on in the country at the moment are beyond belief, dont trust tony blair but also dont know who else to trust. We all need a good shake up and desperatly need someone to run the country properly.
Dont agree with a lot of things that are going on at the moment.
Trust is a big issue
Where do you find that in politics now?
I personally dont know.

I think Great Britian might be one of the greatest, but not "the" greatest. At one time you ruled the seas and your empire was all around the world. Things and times have changed for us all. Myself, I am proud to be an uncivilized yank, we saved Europe's @ss in ww I and ww II and no telling what Europe will allow to happen in the middle east after we pull out at your insistence.

because it has great people, who make the country what it is, oh wait, wrong country!

I am British, but I would have to hesitate before saying Britain is the greatest nation on earth, or that it has remained so for so long, it is populated by some of the most selfish, self centred, stupid people ................

The answer to this one is the simplest answer in the world. If the state TV company (BBC 1 to 10) have over time brainwashed the gullible among us, they obviously think it is. So I am British and I don't think it is or ever will be, so which country are you in? Switch to Sky is what I say.

And like North Korea State TV, Its Directors are appointed by the PM.

Because we have a sense of humour that is second to none. We can and do laugh at ourselves. We love animals, but the main stay of our strength and greatness is our addiction to a nice cup of tea, it solves everything and leaves us fighting fit.
