The periodic table is organized by atomic number, so the number of protons or electrons it has. The atomic mass tends to increase as well, but it is by number.

Atomic No. This hasn't changed since Mendeleev. The periodic table is designed to organize the elements in a way that will demonstrate their chemical properties, which is totally dependent on atomic no.

It is ordered by atomic number, although you'll see that, for the most part, the atomic mass increases as well. However there are some adjoining elements that have the same or very similar atomic masses.
