do it in the UK, the pound is stronger than the dollar at the moment, so doing this in America will give you less money on the exchange rate.

Go to UK -broke let the USA enbassy pay your staying bill- and then when you can back you will have at least another 6 months free food and board...you will continue to be a guest of the USA Federal Goverment.....the weather now is very cold in UK be sure you take with you couple of very warm blankets.(use Credit with no intention to Pay)..because neither the UK or USA will be able to supply you with warm blankets...all went to IRAQ. When you become a guest of USA Embassy, tell the Ambassador that you know me and he will give you acomandations to a 5 star hotelat least. God blessyou-have a nice trip come back safe, and UK is always nice no matter what time of the year you will visit. Do not forget to learn to sing " GOD SAVE THE QUEEN".

You need to checkout the various banks websites and find their exchange rates.
Make sure you look at the correct prices as there will be two prices. The one is the price they buy at and the other is the price they sell at.

You may find it is best to use your normal credit card for your major purchases, if you have a card that is accepted in the UK.

Do it in the UK the rate will be better. Shop around several different banks and travel agencies for the best rate as they vary from place to place.

get the rates from different banks. If it's a large sum the difference can add up.
