Also, you can call the phone maufacturer and they will give you the SUBSIDY UNLOCK CODE. They will also tell you how to input it and it should work.

Knowing what type of phone you have would help get more accurate answers
1st to correct some of the statements above.
The Manufacturer of the phone will NOT give you the subsity code
T-Mobile WILL give you the code IF you are a current T-mobile customer in good standing and you tell them you will be traveling out of the country and want to use that country’s sim card.
Not all cell phones can be simply unlocked by hooking it to your computer. Some Motorola models can through software but you run a high risk of ruining your phone if you are not sure what you are doing.
Your best and safest way is to find a local independent mobile shop or to use some of the trusted mail services available. Cost could be between 20 to 40 dollars.
If you have a Nokia phone, certain (not all) Nokia models can be unlocked through a calculator. Some Nokia forums have members that will calculate the code for you for free

I love this! Ok. Most cellphones are unlocked by their phone service so that you can't use it in another company. These cellphones are protected with software and CAN BE UNLOCKED.
You will NOT get help from your Customer Support, trust me.
You need to connect your cellphone to your computer, you can use Infrared Connection, Bluetooth Connection or even regular USB Connection. Then, download an unlock software such as MobileEdit! (not FREE) or pe2ktools (FREE!) If you can't connect your cellphone to your computer since it doesn't meet the requirements (Infrared, Bluetooth, USB) then you may buy an adaptor (depending on your cellphone). If there are no adaptors for your cellphone model, then you can send your cellphone by mail!
There is a service in http://unlockmyphone.com/ that may be useful.
I unlocked my Motorola RAZR V3 using pe2ktools and it works great but I was thinking of mailing it.
Anyways, I hope that this helped you.
PS: If you have a Motorola RAZR you may want to enter here http://www.themotoguide.com/unlocking.php

I'm sorry, but Cingular SIM cards will only work on Cingular phones. Put one into your T-Mobile Phone, but the phone won't regignize it. I'm sorry, I really am...
