He didn't want to get "stuck" playing such a well-known children's television character. Not because he didn't like the show or doesn't like children, of course. He plays in a rock band! He's passionate about his music, and he wants to be known for that, not for being Steve---especially because it's a hard rock band.

There was a rumor that it was becuase he was doing drugs and then died but that is not true, in fact he is still alive.
It is probably because he got a better role.
