r + 4 = 3 --- divide both sides by 4

The distributive rule applies.

4 times the quantity r + 4 = 4r + 16

4r+ 16 = 12

4r= 12 - 16 = -4

r= negative 1 (for some reason, the - sign didn't want to print)

open the bracket

4r + 16 = 12
move 16 to the other side

4r = 12 - 16
4r = -4
r = -1
