I am a Christian, and a fairly strong practicing one. I am sick and tired of people perverting the Bible to suit their needs or to go against something (more like bring others against something). The Bible warns us to not practice witchcraft, sorcery, and such. Harry Potter does not promote the practice of witchcraft. It is pure and simple entertainment. Just like Star Wars or Lord of the Rings. I've heard crackpots gripe about Harry Potter, then promote Lord of the Rings as a great movie. What's the difference? Both have sorcery? Ahhh, the Good vs. Evil angle perhaps? Doesn't cut it....both have good and bad sorcerers.

If you question is simply, which Book would you prefer to pick up to read before going to bed...Harry Potter or the Bible. Most nights I pick up the Bible and read. There are other nights I pick up other things to read.

Why does it have to be a competition? As a Christian, I certainly don't think that reading the Bible is unimportant. It's very important, but it's not the only thing that we should read. For one thing, if the Bible is the only book that you ever read, you are allowing your faith and worldview to go unchallenged. In my opinion, an unexplored and unchallenged faith is a weak faith. Opening your mind to other perspectives only enriches your faith experience and makes you stronger. Secondly, you have to realize, as others have mentioned, that Harry Potter is for entertainment. Christians are supposed to avoid Harry Potter because it contains witchcraft? Okay then - are we also supposed to avoid all books and movies that include any form of magic? Do we avoid books like Alice in Wonderland, The Lord of the Rings, or the Chronicles of Narnia? Just because a book contains magical themes does not mean that it has a bad message. The Chronicles of Narnia, while being very magical in nature, parallel the story of Christ's death and resurrection. Go do some reasearch on The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe if you doubt me on this. Harry Potter, while it contains magic, also contains a lot of good. It shows us the protective force of pure love, and the beauty of loyalty in faithful friendships.

I think that saying that any book is "bad" and to be avoided is to doubt the discriminating powers of the human mind that are God-given. Even the youngest children know that Harry Potter is not real, and that it's just a story. Look for the good in things too instead of just always looking for the bad, and remember that fiction doesn't have to be evil.

You are clearly missing the Christian undertones in this book. You seem to just assume because there is magic it's all about witchcraft and evil.... have you even ever read one of these books? I'm guessing no because you're question seems completely ignorant. If you have, you don't know your Bible or are not very good at drawing connections to the theologic allusions woven throughout the series. The fantasy world created in this series draws in tons of children who would otherwise not read and I'm glad because it's not like every school system is doing a good job of exciting kids about reading. Try reading the series and then get out your Bible and look for the connections. If you want to push the Bible you could have a class discussing Christianity and the HP series and turn it into a further discussion about The Bible if you'd like. You'd probably draw in people who might not otherwise attend a theology discussion because of the basis of the series.

There is no competition between the two.

I am a Christian and I think Harry Potter is brilliant and that you might just be an ignorant moron.

huh?! I think Harry Potter is fantastic-its encouraged so many children (and adults!) to read and get involved with creative writing. people are finally using their imaginations and its so great to see people looking forward to the release of a book as opposed to like a PS3 or some video game. I'm Christian but there is some ridiculous stuff in the Bible-it tells that everybody has to act and behave a certain way either because of their gender or something else. I believe in God but not in the Bible

since when does reading something automatically made you a bad person? Besides you have no reason to judge the books until you read them, how can you accurately judge something as wrong until you have looked into the situation. I would definitely consider myself a Christian, yet I love the Harry Potter books as good fictional writing, you don't have to chose between the Bible and fiction, some times fiction can even be a good exploration of our own faith.

Harry Potter is a good vs. evil book, something we all go through every single day. It's an ongoing competition in our lives. I am Christian and Love Harry Potter, it's one of my favorite books. God creates miracles which are some things we can't explain, isn't that what magic is? If you look at it like that it's the same thing different name basically.

I can't believe people get fired up about a simple novel like Harry Potter...it does not endorse witchcraft or Satanism. On the flip side of the question, how do we know the Bible wasn't simple the best selling novel of Mesopotamia back a couple of thousand years ago? How stupid would you feel to be following the lifestyle choices endorse by a popular fiction writer...oh, whooops, yeah, that kinda describes Scientology, doesn't it?! I'm not an aethiest but neither do I believe that the Bible is the end all, be all to determine my behaviour. I think each individual is responsible to themselves and their own moral judgements. Period.

I am a Christian...but disliking Harry Potter b/c it makes references to magic is ridiculous! Harry Potter is a poignant tale about a heroic boy who makes a perilous journey into manhood...who risks his life for his friends, does everything he can to vanquish evil, and etc. So what if he has a wand? And you have to admit, Harry Potter is much more interesting to read than the Bible, no matter how religious you are.

Good question, first of all. Second, I am a Christian, but Harry Potter is still one of my all time favorite books. I've read every book twice, and just because i read harry potter doesnt mean i practice witchcraft, i'm not crazy.

Witchcraft has only been prohibited by certain branches of Christianity in the last few hundred years. Eastern Orthodox believers practiced forms of witchcraft right up until the 18th century (though they were a fairly small group by that time). So, the black-white divide you've just suggested really needs to be examined.

Anyway, how is Harry Potter witchcraft? It is about spells, yes, but its interests are more in the characters that use them than magic itself. Spells are introduced more a convenient device than the subject of a plot.

ha ha ha. Hmm who should I vote for??? That's a tough one. Get over it already. It's just a childrens book. Hey what else should I not read or watch just because YOU say so?? If you think harry potter is evil, then you shouldn't leave your house. Actually I can't write anymore, I'm laughing too hard at this question.
