A "walk-off" home run is a home run hit by the home team in the bottom of the ninth inning or later to seal the win when before the score was a tie or the home team was trailing. Two World Series, out of 102, have ended in a walk-off home run. They are the 1960 Pirates vs. Yankees matchup, which the Pirates won in Game 7 on slick-fielding Hall of Fame second baseman Bill Mazeroski's walk-off solo home run on a pitch by Ralph Terry, and the 1993 Blue Jays vs. Phillies classic, with Joe Carter of the Blue Jays crushing a dramatic home run off closer Mitch 'Wild Thing' Williams. The term was coined by Hall of Fame reliever Dennis Eckersley. The term has come to mean the batter walks off the field after hitting the home run, or the long walk to the dugout by the losing pitcher. There are "walk-off" base hits, but as they are not home runs, they are not spoken as "walk-off" hits that often. More often, they are game-winning hits.

Yes. A walk off base hit, being a home run or a single just means the hit was the means to end the game. You walk off the field because the game is over.

Usually in the 9th inning when the last team to bat is losing and hits a homerun to go ahead. When they round the bases they can "Walk Off" the field because the game is over..

It is used when the home team wins the game with a homerun in the bottom of the last inning of play. The most famous walk-off was Joe Carter of the Blue Jays to win the world series.

"Walk-off" in baseball just means that the play that just happened ended the game. The bases could be loaded and if the pticher hits the batter in the botom of the ninth to walk in the winning run than its a walk off hit by pitch.

A home run, base hit, double, triple, walk, hit by a pitch, or a balk can be called "walk off" if it results in the game winning run in the bottom of the 9th inning, in the bottom of extra innings, or in a regularly scheduled final inning. Read more about it.
