I know it depends on who is dishing it out, a stranger versus someone you trust...but either way, it really gets to me when someone wrongly accuses me of a bad behavior.

If I am innocent, I tell them so, if they still say it I knock them out.

If I am guilty I say, yeah thats me, wanna try to do something about it.

99% of Beta males tuck tail and run. It is so funny to watch. The other 1%, I knock out if they sneeze the wrong way.

I definitely know how you feel. When someone says something that is outwardly not true, it's irritating, especially when it's defaming your character.

The best advice I can give is what helps me when that happens. At first, reassure yourself that it isn't true and if it is true, think about changing.

Assuming it's not true, because it probably wouldn't bother you as much if it were, try not to let them see you react which is my second suggestion. Stay firm, confident and calm. When people say they are only trying to get a rise out of you, it's true. They get satisfaction from seeing you squirm so don't give them the pleasure. You don't squirm, they don't have fun and they'll stop doing it. I usually respond with a chuckle and an "Okay. Yeah. Sure dude. Whatever" while I'm smiling. Whatever you do, don't fight back. It will only encourage them and keep you upset even longer. Laugh with it. If you find that difficult to do, practice alone in your room. Sounds stupid, and you will look stupid, but no one will see you and it really does work =D

Third, avoid them. Don't make it obvious that you are avoiding them, because that is the same as fighting back. Just avoid them and try not to think about it.

Fourth, distract yourself. Try your hardest not to think about it. Put some tunes on, play a computer game, watch tv - I recommend comedy; whatever you need to do to get your mind off of it. It will take an episode or two of Family Guy to really stop thinking about it, but you will.

I have learned to ignore people that do it to me whether its a family member or friend or stranger. Its not worth it getting upset about it.

I be so nice to them that I prove them wrong. Then I lose them.
