The Imperial Japanese Empire's government was dismantled under US Gen MacArthur. It was replaced with a constitutional monarchy. The Emperor was left as a figurehead, similar to royalty in the UK. They now have a parliament elected by the people. The defeat of Japan caused Korea to become independent; later Korea would be split by civil war [the Korean War, in which the US and the USSR played their parts during the Cold War] between communists and capitalists. It is now divided into North and South Korea. The civil war in China continued and eventually ended in the establishment of the communist People's Republic of China.
