One thing you learn as you get older is that colleges and universities, specially private ones are just businesses. They are in the business of selling education. They advertise like any other business and they advertise based on whatever criteria they deem appropriate.
If you have been contacted by schools it's not because of your grades. They don't have access to your grades and couldn't get access to them unless you give them permission and even then the only way they would know your grades is if you send a transcript to them.
There could be several ways that they got your information. It could be that your name is published on a roster, or that you filled something out at some point in time, or you registered for something on the internet. It could be something inconspicuous like signing up for a prize, a free ticket, or a blog. You'll never know, unless you call them and ask them.
There are not that many ways to get information about minors without parent's permission or your own permission. Schools are pretty careful about giving any info out. The final possibility could be that your parents filled something out. When you request informaiton about one college you could be giving your info to many colleges depending on their privacy policies.

When I was a senior in high school I got a bunch of letters from colleges. They basically just want you to know your options and visit that school (and get your money). You should consider visiting. If your GPA isnt good enough to get into those particular schools then try going to a community college first to get your GPA up!

Colleges identify the profiles of students they think will be a good fit for them, and send letters to those people. You would be amazed at how much information is out there about each of us; you didn't have to do anything to make this happen. In fact, your school may have supplied much of the information. If your friends didn't get similar letters, it may be that they have different characteristics. For example, their grades and test scores may be so good that the schools you mention may assume they will go to more prestigious colleges, so they won't waste time on them. Or they may live in areas which indicate that they probably couldn't afford to go to these schools.

I'm guessing that at some point you took some standardized test (SAT, PSAT, ACT, etc) in which you scored in the range that these colleges recruit students. You probably also filled out an "interest" section of the test in which you listed your hobbies. Maybe your friends didn't take this test, or maybe they indicated on the test somehow that they did not want their scores released to anyone else.

Someone probably sold your info from the internet to different companies, this is how the colleges know how to contact you. Sometimes your school will give your info to colleges. You can set your e-mail up so that when colleges try to e-mail you they'll get redirected as spam.

Yes, I suspect it has to do with you having taken the PSAT, or SAT Subject Tests, or ACT tests. Or perhaps your high schools makes its list of students available to colleges...? Mostly, it doesn't "mean" anything...they know (or think) you are interested ih college, and they're trying to make their school "top of mind" with you as you're thinking through your objectives, preferences, etc.

Did you take the PSAT? I think it has questions regarding that. Colleges look at what you write and try to get you to come to their school based on your answers and score.
