can someone help me interpret this quote, i don't quite understand it, and I need to write an essay on it. "counsel ought to be the very last thing that an accused man wants for in a free country"-john adams.

Look it, John Adams was a lawyer.
He's saying that if you're accused of committing a crime, you should never be lacking, or "wanting for" good counsel from a good lawyer.
John Adams defended English soldiers who were involved in the Boston Massacre. They had panicked in a crowd, and had shot several people, and nobody wanted to counsel them as they went to trial. Even though they were considered the "bad guys" Adams wanted to make sure they got a fair trial. In his eyes, the revolution wasn't worth it unless they treated everyone fairly.

When a person is accused of a crime, he should never lack for legal representation (a defense lawyer) in a free country. This is the most important thing the accused person needs.

i think it means like if your accused of something you don't want people to counsel or help you because they probably believe that you did it and it just doesn't help, you may feel angry or ashamed or nervous or any other feeling, but no matter what they say of do it won't help you, instead you want to have your right to say it is not so because it is a free country and you should be able to state what you believe in ... even if it's not true............. i think this is somewhat on the lines of what it means.... im just taking it and explainig it literally so there might be a hidden message in it that i'm not aware of
