I am trying to replace the pop out console with one I got from a used parts place but it has to slide past the gearshift knob.
Could someone tell me how to remove the knob safely?

on the side or the front of the knob,...there should be a hole...either an allen wrench or a torx bit will fit it. Most likely an allen wrench. loosen that screw and remove the knob.

It should iether un screw.are it may have a small screw in the lower part of the shifter knob.

Here's an easier way.
Put the key in the ignition.
Turn the key to the on position.(Don't start it)
Take it out of "Park" and pull the handle all the way down to "low".
ADDED: SET YOUR PARKING BRAKE!!!
