I was told by my mechanic that my engine "threw a rod"..what does this mean for me and my car? They are talking that the repair is hopeless. It is a 99 Corolla..

I kept wondering why they told me I should have changed my oil! This is upsetting because I am so diligent about changing the oil even before it's needed! Well, maybe it was damage from previous owners? I have not had it more than a few months.

A rod is inside you engine in some instances a rod can break free and hit many other components in your engine and yes in some cases create a hole in your engine. I'm taking a guess that the person that told you they wished you would have changed your oil wasn't really saying you don't do it enough. They may have been refering to why your engine through the rod. If your car was low on oil from a leak some places that is mostlikely what they meant. Low or No oil in the car can cause big problems like this. I hope this helps with understanding possible what they meant. Your car is a 99 and in my opion if you like your car get a new engine don't just fix what is broke have it rebuilt it will last you a whole lot longer than just replacing what is broke. Check around for a remanufactured motor you will get a good warrenty with those. If you choose used they only warrenty them for 30 days and it normally does not cover labor if it is not good. I would only suggest used if you are going to sell it right away, but not to keep. I hope this helps you with your decission making.

to throw a rod means that the connecting rod from the piston to the crankshaft has gone bad...normally a bearing on the crankshaft.

This is a 99 corolla..I'd say fix it...it's less than 10 yrs old...and the engine and labor should not be that bad...probably around $3k total. That's still less than a new car. I say $3k but it could be much less depending on the cost of the new engine and the labor the garage charges...that is a high end price.

Where are you located....if in ks I can reccomend some good mechanics.

The rod is the part that connects between the crank and the piston. The usual meaning of "throw a rod" means it has broken off and is now sticking out through a hole in the engine block, which means you need a whole new engine. That's why you don't drive if the oil light comes on, or if you hear metallic knocking sounds.

It means the piston rod ripped apart part of the engine.

Depending on how fast you got it shut off, it could be repaired.

The car is not totaled but the engine may be. But you can get a new engine easily for that make.

It should mean that a connecting rod has broken, and possibly come through the engine block.

If the block has not been damaged it can be repaired, although it may be costly.

Here is a source for used engines, many are available.

Your engine has pistons that go up and down in a cylinder, they are connected to a crankshaft with what is called a connecting rod. This rod has broken and most probably scraped up the inside of the cylinder walls beyond resonable repair.

That's easy... Guys are intimidated and girls are jealous of how stunningly beautiful you are. Most people assume that you're stuck up. Goes to show you that you can't judge a book by it's cover. Most of the girls I date have very similar features and get the same responses. Don't change a thing about yourself, but get used to people having the wrong impression. The ones worth knowing will take the time to find out that you are kind and caring.
