I have a 1957 Chevrolet 2 Door Bel Air Hardtop with a turbo 400 tranny. The tranny is leaking oil from the shifter shaft. How do i repair. Can it be done from the outside or do i have to pull the pan down and repair from the inside

You should be able to remove the shift lever from the trans.. You might then need a special tool to remove and install the seal.

it's just a seal...called the shift shaft seal. it can be replaced without removing anything other than the linkage...there is a nut that holds it all in place. be careful or you will end up losing the shift shaft inside the transmission pan...then you have to pull the pan...no biggy though...while you are there replace the filter and fluid
