The Calder Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to the top Rookie in the National Hockey League. The voting is conducted by members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association at the conclusion of the regular season. The current holder of the Calder trophy is Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin. He beat out Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Dion Phaneuf of the Calgary Flames.

He got it because all the Anti-European sentiment amongst the inner circle NHL voters, and all of the Pro-Mario Pro-Canadian sentiment amongst those same voters could not overcome what was so painfully obvious:
Ovechkin had a better year than Crosby.
