I don't think you can have a "perfect" gift for all your friends. But if you had to choose, I would say gift cards. A couple years ago I realized that no matter what you buy, you can never really guess what someone else wants. If they don't tell you, you are bound to disappoint someone. Gift cards are sometimes viewed as lazy, but I know many people who now request them so they can shop themselves. And I personally appreciate the gift card so I can take my time thinking about what I would like to purchase.

There really isn't THE perfect gift for all friends. Gift cards are good but simple and when people get them, they don't get all excited and stuff that people do when they get other things. Give them something they can treasure and keep, or is useful to them. If someone is untidy, you might give them something to solve that problem, or if they're always late, give them a planner!
If it's a child, know what they like, not all girls like barbie dolls or pink stuff. In-fact, the know what they like part kinda goes with everyone, know what they need or like. That's the how to get close to that perfect gift.

Our friends pretty much have everything so we have a get-together with lots of good foods & good drinks. We watch movies, socialize, and just enjoy each others company.
They all like it and look forward to it every year.....and it's a gift they can't return.

Depends on the friend, I try to make it thoughtful, yet a still a token. Girls like crystal or figurines, guys, sports stuff or food. If you do a gift card, make it to a place you know they like.
