The Natives brought fish to the first Thanksgiving. They had Turkey (and duck) and squash (pumpkins are squash) and potato's. We have that today. Why don't we have fish with our "traditional" Thanksgiving dinner?

I can think of several viable reasons:
-many American traditions grew out of English traditions and game birds were more traditional for major holidays in that culture
-turkeys and other game birds can and have been farmed and mass produced much longer than fish farming in most parts of the world (especially in the cultures that shaped colonial America)
-histroically, more people could go out and hunt game birds to feed folks for a large feast than could harvest enough fish for the centerpiece of the meal. (the real question should be why not deer instead of turkey....)

There are traditional fish and shellfish side dishes served in many regions. For example: Oyster stew in VA (old colonial tradition); clams in New England stuffing, fish cakes (various regions).

BTW: I don't eat birds so I always have fish on Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving only would not look quite desirable without the classic turkey and pumpkin pie. yet you may have further products like fish, mac and cheese, distinctive varieties of pies (apple, pecan, candy potato, etc.) and cheesecake.

Because salmon's out of season, and I can't think of any other fish I'd serve for a special occasion.

Well, some people do incorporate seafood into the dinner by making oyster dressing to accompany the turkey.

Good question!

I think it's because a lot of people don't like fish or have access to fresh fish.

I don't know but I wish we did. I hate killing and eating any animal. Go ahead and eat your fish or whatever you want for your Thanksgiving dinner. It is all too much work and bother and all you do is gain weight and clog your arteries anyway
