what you need to be looking for is a dress that is plain no frills or sparkles. try a strapless dress in black (so you dont stand out like white or red) and silk so you get the girly look without being too girly. my friend found one on e-bay very simple and was quite cheap so if your not likely to wear it again being as you said not girly it wont be money wasted. hope you find that dress you never know you might be the bell of the ball with out knowing it ... hope you find it and have a good night...

Go under bridesmaid dresses. They'll give you a whole lot of selections from different companies and some of them are really nice. you can put in a price range and a style. I think they also have a section for just formals, but I can't remember right now.
Chadwick's, Newport News, and Metrostyle have a few formal things.
