A neutron becomes a proton and an electron. The electron becomes a beta radiation particle.

The lowest electron energy orbital that the electron is "allowed" to exist in is way outside the nucleus. This is what the quantum theory is all about. So an electron cannot stay in the nucleus, despite being attracted to the protons in there.
