Mongoose

2006-11-21 09:46:30 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 1 1

The mongoose. It battles it out with the spectacled cobra which strikes very quickly, but frequently with the mongoose not quickly enough. With each miss the snake has less and less venom, all wasted with each miss, and then the mongoose can kill and eat the snake.

Next in line is the felines. I've seen a bobcat or wildcat of some kind kill a rattlesnake and rattlesnakes strike lightning fast, just not fast enough! So any feline animal, that is tigers, lions, leopards, cheetahs, lynxes, jaguars, etc., etc., etc. That whole group or classification of animals is second.

Although you know a housefly has pretty good reflexes when I'm trying to hit it with a fly swatter. I think the only ones you actually hit are almost dead of "old age" anyway.

Apparently it's either an ant (Trap-Jaw ant), or a crustacean (Mantis Shrimp) depending on who you ask.

From the first link below:
A tiny ant has the fastest jaw in the animal kingdom – literally quicker than the blink of an eye.

The trap-jaw ant's scientific name may be ponderous, Odontomachus bauri, but this hunter can clamp its mandibles shut at between 78 mph and 145 mph, according to a report in Monday's online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

That makes it faster than the mantis shrimp, former record holder for fastest strike, according to researchers led by Sheila Patek, assistant professor of integrative biology at the University of California Berkeley

From the second link below:
Mantis shrimps are mere inches long but can throw the fastest punch of any animal. They strike with the force of a rifle bullet and can shatter aquarium glass and crab shells alike. Now with the aid of super-speed cameras, we are beginning to truly appreciate how powerful this animal is.

I hope this was helpful!
