Select "Tools | Options" from the main menu in Firefox.
Change to the "General" tab/section.
Check the "Firefox should check to see if it is the default browser when starting" option.
Click "OK".
Close all Firefox windows (for best results, restart the system). Finally, restart Firefox.
When the "Would you like to make [Firefox] your default browser?" prompt appears, click "Yes" to make Firefox the default browser.

Here's the setting:
To make Firefox your default web browser, select Tools > Options > General, and check the box under Default Browser. When you want to surf you can just click on your Firefox icon, but if someone sends you an outside link, they should all open in Firefox. Cheers!

2 Ways of doing this
1) During the initial Installation you the Firefox installer asks you if you ant to make this the default browser
2) At any time start Firefox, Click on the "Tools" menu then click on "Options" and a window will come up select the "General" tab and click on the button marker "check now" this will then allow you check and set the default browser
You can also go into IE and set it there in as similar manner for IE to become the default browser

In the "Tools" option on the toolbar select "Options".
On the "General" tab you can select Firefox as the default browser and also check to ensure it is.
When I did this I had a message pop up next time I used IE asking if I wanted to make IE my default browser. Obviously if you want to keep Firefox as default either don't open IE or just select "No" when you receive this prompt.

In Windows XP, go to "Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Set Program Access and Defaults (on the left) -> Custom". After expanding the "Custom" category, you will see Internet Explorer and other installed browsers listed under "Choose a default Web browser". Select Mozilla or Mozilla Firefox.

That's it. Firefox is set as Default Browser.

Go to Tools / Options
Under "Main"
See System Defaults and check the check box for "Always check to see if firefox is the default browser on startup"
That will make it the default browser and ensure that it stays that way every time you load firefox.
Enjoy

After you open Firefox, open tools, options, Main, and then click on Check Now, it will check to see if Firefox is your default browser, if it isn't it will ask if you want it to be , click on Yes, it will then make it your default browser, and you don't need to close Firefox.
