Amanda P: It was all tongue in cheek. Just having a laugh because it's all the stuff everybody in the world makes fun out of England for. There are alot of positives as well. Do you know how long the list would have been for other countries like America? Once again only joking because people get angry but you have to admit alot of it is true. Believe it or not but I love England apart from what I mentioned, it's so quaint and traditional.

I suspect its probably only people who feel the need to dislike others that pick on a 'type' to vent their own feelings of insecurity. We have many friends and relatives from all over the Isles and we all get on and party together - never met any hostilities yet!!! So sad you feel like you do. Just take everyone on their face value and you could be in for a pleasant surprise - not just with the English, but Irish and Scots too (even tho you are from Ireland!)

Sometimes it has to do with our history. Where I live in Wales, lots of the land was just given to the English and even now, English people can come from their more expensive housing areas and make offers on houses that the locals here can't compete with - taking the area over again and forcing the locals out. Some might refer to this as a race memory. In Ireland there was the potato famine and the English government did not respond to the need quickly enough - so catastrophically people in your country starved. I am so sorry.
These things can set the stage for one country's people to dislike another country's.

I think because we went to a lot of places and killed a lot of people during our imperial days. Aside from people the English directly conquered, we had rivalries with most of Europe and fought most of them too, so at times of war the England created stereotypes about their enemy and the enemy did to the English. Also for a long time the English suffered from what many Americans do now, we were the most powerful nation and the richest, we were very arrogant and disrespectful of other countries. Some English people still maintain that we should be telling all other countries what to do.

I don't know.
I hate all this don't like the E nglish, Don't like Muslims, Don't like Nigerians etc etc etc.
Judge each person you meet on their own merits and do not tar them with the problems of a nation.
I have met some fantastic Irish people and I have met some horrible Irish people. I have seen the IRA bombings but do not blame Irish people for that.
Its soooooo silly.
Sorry but thats how I feel.
I like nice friendly people whatever your race colour creed or religion.

You havent met the right people!
Generally i think its a combination of many things. For example, british empire days, we've alot of clout 4 such a small country, being conservative, the british weather, our involvement with USA...we poke our noses in where perhaps we shouldnt...right down to the way we talk!

Some of the answerer's received are what give nations a bad name. I am English but lived in Germany for 15 years, majority of the German people that knew us English, thought we were wonderful, and then went against their own people, saying they were rude and arrogant. But i must admit the English are getting very full of themselves.
