A super model is a woman who `shows off` clothes.accessories,make-up etc, she does this for the manufacture/designer or retailer so that he can sell the items to the mass market. She will earn a lot of money for her work.and by the very nature of her job, she is a celebrity and has her photo in the media for both her work and her personal social life. She will possibly have a short career-life because the appeal of a model depends on whether or not she has `the look` that will be required for the time and this constantly changes. Usually the models are beautiful, but this is not a criteria, as to look `different` is important for them to get noticed and remembered.

Mainly it is to do with being wanted by major advertizing campaigns - jewelry, clothing, luxury brands in general, cosmetics and then your major high street chains. What makes a model a super model is her versatility to represent each one of these as if it is the only and the best one - obviously with it come the earnings.

Don't think the answer has anything to do with 'what they earn,' I suspect that in the long run, it has to do with what those companies who associate with the models name (sign her up) can earn from this.
Personally, I detest the breed and their inability to actually seem to be able to do anything useful for society beyond the ability to be seen 'posing.'
However, I'm wondering if your question was more tongue-in-cheek than it appears!
