If everyone knows eachother really well, have each family write five trivia questions about themselves. Then, at the party, put them all into a hat and then play a trivia game/contest. It's hilarious. My family did it one year.

Play some updated ballads on cd or tapes and make a posterboard for a
scrapebook theme. Cutting up magazines and looking through
the recipes and tables is a great warm up for a good chat. Now
when the poster is finished, look at the artwork honestly, and
as the hostess put aside a selection of art you admire. Plan
a make believe trip to Milano, or Paris and what kind of places
would you love most to see for the thanksgiving christmas
season. Maybe have the kids make cards with poster paper.

Depending on the numbers but for arguments sake lets say there are thirty. It works with more or less.
My mother used to do this.
She went to the dollar store and bought ten items, mug, picture frame, chocolate bar, even lotto tickets, whatever. Can be toys or jokes. Some times she had a couple of nicer gifts too.
She wrapped them all up differently and in different styles and size boxes but no one knows what is in any.

Write out numbers on a piece of paper, enough so every one participating can have five or six. Smaller children can team up with seniors, you will see why in a moment.

Now put the numbers in a hat and pass it around so everyone takes five or six.

You or someone chosen call the numbers one at a time, be sure to mark them off. As each ones number is chosen they go get their "gift or prize", wait for them to go get it and come back, believe me all will watch who gets what.

When all of the items in the pile are gone each new winner must take someone elses package until all of the numbers are called. No one can hide theirs, it must be displayed prominently for all to see.

Try it
