A sledge hammer, just kidding, though that would probably work, in order to make sure no data can be read from your hard drive you need to wipe it with random data many many times, 7 being the bare minimum, and 35 being the industry standard, or a hundred or more if you're really paranoid.

You can easily do this with a program called boot and nuke:

You of course will have to reinstall your operating system after doing this, and all of your files will be forever gone so make backups of any you want to keep.

Sometimes reformatting is not enough because information still can be recovered. So if you want to wipe your hdd without any possibility for it to be recovered I can recommend you to purchase Acronis Drive Cleanser. Besides wiping hard drive ADC also can format drive and partition it. You can read about its features here:

how do you mean manually? cause technically speaking, if you manually wipe it out, its like just formatting it and erasing the entire data of the hard drive. so if you have a boot disk, you may run the command from it, format c: , which normally your local disk, and it will prompt to say, "are you sure you want to format?" yes or no" so just click on yes and it will do the format. XD

Formatting. I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems. Some RAM/hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful. Try this site, if you can get what is required.
