Yes, I hate to be cynical, but it's about the money. Joe Pa spoke out strongly about this a few days ago. We need to stop focusing on the money and the profits, and find a system that is fair.
It may not be possible to determine the "national champion" since the conferences vary so much---some are "semi-pro" and don't bother with the "scholar" in "scholar-athletes" as much as others do.
This year, the Big Ten, known for outstanding athletics AND academics, has the two best teams in the nation.

If USC beats Notre Dame they would have beaten 2 top 10 teams, the Irish and they whooped Arkansas earlier. Plus they've beaten top 20 teams like Cal and Oregon. My guess a win over Notre Dame and UCLA puts USC in the title game. No one wants to see Michigan play OSU again because even if Michigan wins that means they'd be tied for the season at 1-1 and that would just be stupid, so lets get another team in there. I don't know if unfair is the right word, ofcourse we all want a playoff system, but that would be a radical change. Say we a an 8 team playoff, then there will always be arguements about who those 8 teams should be and they would have to cut the schedule and it would damage the prestige of other bowl games. To me theres nothing wrong with having co-champions, it's actually quite graicious, its like saying your both champions.

Many of the polls are subjective while others are based on computer ranking which take into account poll rankings, strength of schedule, and strength of the opponents they have played. Should Ohio State rematch against Michigan for the title, then other teams who remain unbeaten (like Boise State right now) will definitely have a valid argument for their inclusion in that title game. All the 1 loss teams will be judged by their computer rankings for inclusion. Should there be an all-Big10 championship title game, the BCS will have to review their judging criteria because some conferences have a conference title playoff which would ultimately preclude their conference from such a matchup.
Whatever happens, Ohio State has the best team in the nation, everyone else is just lining up to see which team they will beat.

Lets start with typical Out of Conference schedules -- The variable that can be somewhat controlled. (conferences are what they are)
USC beat Arkansas at Arkansas, Beat Nebraska and plays Notre Dame.
Michigan -- let's see, They beat Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, and Central Michigan, and Ball State.
Arkansas -- They got beat by a young USC team in thier house by 36. Arkansas should have been ready, they had a year to think about getting embarrassed in Los Angeles the previous year. As far as the rest of their OOC schedule, not even worth going there.
See a difference?
If you want to be up for consideration to be the best, you have to schedule the teams that are traditionally among the best.

i'm assuming this decision is for the Fiesta, Sugar, or Orange Bowl, on account that neither of those communities is in all probability to make it to the Rose Bowl. That being mentioned, if it did come all the way down to a decision between them, i think of the BCS nod might circulate in the direction of Penn State. Penn State followers holiday nicely (meaning the team will usher in greater money than maximum different communities) and with a greater effective checklist than USC, i think of they might have earned it. after all, their one loss is to 4th ranked Iowa, the place USC lost to Oregon (a sturdy team which could be ranked even larger now that they have beat USC) and to Washington (this is an embarassment).

All of the teams you listed have 1 loss. So someone has to take the 3rd spot. Michigan is in 2nd place in the BCS. So how is USC being in 3rd not fair to the Wolverines? Did you forget your pacifier at work today?

Every team has only lost once...it has to do with who you have played though..if you dont have a hard schedule then you dont get to play. USC lost but they lost in the same week that about 5 other top 10 teams did and they didnt move down any...

It's the BCS man. Nothing makes any sense. College football needs a playoff. So the best team will be decided on the field.
