Cheerleading is very similar to other sports in many aspects. For one, it requires one to be extremely athletic and motivated. The warm up sessions alone, as mentioned above, are quite intense and require a high level of flexibility and physcial fitness. Cheerleaders must also be strong and muscular to be able to hold the weight of another full grown body nearly six feet in the air. This requires regular visits to the gym and practice with lifting weights.
Furthermore, like any other sport, cheerleading can be very competitve.Cheerleaders prepare several months in advance putting together a rountine that will be used to compete against other teams from around the state or even country. Placing 1 st in these competitions is just as rewarding as say a football team beating the number one team in their division.
Taking a deeper look into cheerleading, one must fully understand every aspect of the sport to fully appreciate it. The basic requirements of a cheerleading team include dancing ability, cheer and chant memorization, tumbling experience, and stunting techniques. All of these things take a great deal of hard work and practice to pull off.
Stunting/Pyramids
Stunts are a real crowd pleaser and are usually what cheeleaders are known for. Stunting involves balancing the weight of another teammate several feet in the air. The very basic stunts involve a group of three people lifting one girl above their heads into a very visual pose. Sometimes, only one person will hold the person in the air by themselves;(usually performed by male cheerleaders). In college, cheerleaders can make pyramids and throw two or three girls on top of eachother in the air. Other stunts include throwing a teammember in the air where she attempts a back flip in mid air then falls back into the hands of the people below her. The people underneath must use their strength to catch her fall in a manner that doesnt look like a ton of bricks coming down. College stunting becomes more complex making levels where one girl will blance on another girl who is already in the air. For descriptions or to learn more about high level stunting, one can check out Try these stunts!. These stunts require large cheerleading squads. Below is a table that offers some suggestions for stunts to try with squads of eight or more.

CHEERLEADING IS TOO A SPORT!!!all of you peoples who say it isnt you are SO wrong!!!it is as much a sport as any other...it is not just dancing and looking pretty!it isnt just dancing either.a lot of time and hard work goes into it.it takes people who are not only physically but mentally strong too.bases are the ones who are picking people up so they have to have strong arms and legs.flyers have to have arm and leg strength and very good balance.spots have to keep their eyes on the flyer at all times.everyone must memorize the routine count for count and everyone gets hurt in the process.just because there is not a lot of running or there isnt protective clothing or a ball to throw around doesnt mean it isnt sport...i could go on and on about this
but i will get in trouble if i stay up too late...IT IS A SPORT!!!

Yes, COMPETITION cheerleading IS a sport, no matter what your opinion actually is, it's been recognized by the experts. And as for you "Edward S" there are plenty of other SPORTS where you need a panel of judges to determine who is the best, gymnastics being one of them. Or do you think gymnastics isn't a sport either? Becuase that'll get ya some contraversy!

Oh God, not this question again.
No, cheerleading is not a sport. If you need a panel of judges to subjectively determine who was "best" it is *not* a sport, regardless of the level of athletic skill necessary to do it.
