My car overheated and yoo-hoo (rust colored coolant) just spilled out onto the driveway. What could be the cause of this and how do I check for symptoms?
My friend said if it's the top radiator hose it's the thermostat; if it's the bottom hose, it's the radiator. I just went outside to feel the hose and the top one is crunchy when I squeeze it. What does this indicate? Thanks for everyone's help.

Drain coolant, remove hoses, remove thermostat, flush engine block with garden hose(15 minutes), flush radiator, buy new thermostat (180 degree), new hoses, and new coolant. remember to use proper gasket on thermostat housing, along with a good sealent("Indian Head" works best). Re-assemble all parts and fill with 50/50 mix of coolant and water. You will have to recheck levels after new thermostat opens.

If your hoses are 'crunchy', they probable have an inner support spring that has rusted away, and in that case, you really have to follow the above directions.

Or, you could just bring it to a mechanic and spend 200-400.

on your car that is a loaded question. did it do it standing sill or driving. it could be the fans not working. maybe the thermostat stuck closed. i would start with new hoses and thermostat. was it low on coolant? that would be a leak somewhere that would also be a cause of your overheating.
